Sturgis teen makes plea deal in death of Wyoming girl

UPDATE (9:30 a.m. 05/05/20): According to the Meade County State’s Attorney’s Office, Campbell will plead guilty to Manslaughter in the 1st degree.

The parties have agreed to a sentence of 55 years.

A judge does not need to approve changes to a charge. In this case, however, the judge does have to approve the jointly recommended sentence of 55 years.

 

 

MEADE COUNTY, S.D. — There is news of a plea deal for the Sturgis teen accused in the death of a Wyoming girl last October.

The Meade County State’s Attorney’s Office, confirming today that it and the attorney for Michael Campbell have reached an agreement.

Campbell is charged in the death of 16-year-old Shayna Ritthaler of Moorcroft, Wyoming.

Ritthaler was reported missing on October 3 of last year, her body was discovered in the basement of Campbell’s home 11-days later. The 17-year-old Campbell was charged as an adult with second-degree murder.

He has a change-of-plea hearing scheduled for Thursday, May 7.
