Sturgis Scoopers prepare for state track meet

STURGIS, S.D. – The state track and field championships are set to kick off on Friday.

The first day of competition will take place with Class AA in Brandon Valley, Class A in Tea and Class B in Sioux Falls. The final session on Saturday will feature all three classes at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls.

The Sturgis Scoopers are sending 27 athletes to the state track meet.

Ethan Brenneman is ranked number one in the state in the 800 meter run, while Gavin West is second in the 110 meter hurdles.

Meanwhile, the Scoopers have three athletes ranked in the top 10 in the girls triple jump, Makayla Keffeler, Loralee Stock and Breezy Paul.

“The boys did a fantastic job,” Sturgis head track coach Blake Proefrock said. “Ended up winning conference. The girls were runners-up. I think overall its just a process. Even made it through the weather and had to deal with that. Continued to improve. The kids did a nice job being persistent. Practicing hard. You know I think we reached some of our goals and some still to go get.”
