UPDATE: Sturgis pedestrian killed in accident identified

UPDATE — Oct. 29, 2019 1:52 p.m.

STURGIS, S.D. — The victim from yesterday’s accident has been identified as Jerry Watkins, age 68, of Sturgis. The driver is identified as Gary Vandenberg, age 59, of Sturgis.

STURGIS, S.D. — Oct. 28, 2019 3:01 p.m.

68-year-old Sturgis man was struck by a vehicle while crossing the street on a crosswalk, trapping him under the vehicle, after being rushed to Sturgis Regional Hospital he passed away from his injuries.

The Sturgis Police Department responded to a pedestrian versus vehicle accident this morning at approximately 8:26 a.m.. The driver, a 59-year-old male from Sturgis was driving a 2014 Chevy pickup west on Sherman Street. After stopping at the intersection of Harley Davidson Way the vehicle continued west striking a 68-year-old Sturgis male who was crossing the street on the crosswalk, trapping him under the vehicle.

Officers and by-standers were able to move the vehicle off the victim and provided first aid until the ambulance arrived and transported him to Sturgis Regional Hospital where he passed away from his injuries. The driver was cited for an obstructed windshield. The Sturgis Police Department would like to remind drivers to take the proper time to clean the snow and ice off their vehicle’s windows so their vision is not obstructed.

The victim’s name is being withheld pending notification of family. This investigation is still under investigation by the Sturgis Police Department with the assistance of the South Dakota Highway Patrol.
