Sturgis is moving forward with $1.27 million dollar event center

STURGIS, S.D. — The Sturgis City Council Monday night approved a motion to move forward with the purchase of a new event center in downtown Sturgis.

The new $1.27 million dollar event center will be located at 1219 Main Street in the old Mr. Al’s building, adjacent to the Harley-Davidson rally point.

In years prior, events such as wedding receptions or family reunions were held at the Sturgis Community Center or the Sturgis Auditorium.

“In 2019 we actually held about 33 event at those facilities which of course, close down the gym space. And we weren’t able to use it for youth sports and adult recreation and different things like that,” said Daniel Ainslie, Sturgis city manager. “Things like that, and also just those existing facilities are gyms and they look like gyms and so the ambiance isn’t really there for a meeting facility.”

Spearfish and Rapid City both have event centers, so the city of Sturgis wants to be able to provide a venue for its citizens as well.

Ainslie said a renovation budget of $365,000 has been established.
