Sturgis girls basketball team has high hopes for season

STURGIS, S.D. – The Sturgis girls basketball team is busy gearing up its season opener on Dec. 7.

The Scoopers are coming off a 10-10 season in which they lost to Harrisburg in the Round of 16. But the Scoopers showed nice signs of progress last year by winning their final four games of the regular season.

Sturgis has a strong group of returning players including seniors Loralee Stock, Cassidy Jorensen, Olivia Jolley, Gwen Simmons and Haley Lambert.

Head Coach Jordan Proefrock is excited about the upcoming season.

“This is the first year where we can consider ourselves a veteran team,” Proefrock said. “The majority of our roster is seniors and juniors. I have five seniors and I have five juniors and they’ve put in a ton of time. I’ve had three go and sign to play college basketball already. I feel like we’re a veteran experienced team ready to go.”

“We definitely want to win the Black Hills Conference and that’s an attainable goal,” Sturgis senior guard Cassidy Jorensen said. “We hope we can strive and get that. We hope we can make it to state and I think if we work as a team, we definitely could possibly get there.”

The Scoopers will travel to Box Elder on Friday to take on the Douglas Patriots.

Then Sturgis will have four straight home games starting with Pierre on Saturday followed by games against Belle Fourche, Aberdeen Central and Spearfish.
