Sturgis girls basketball team has a lot of shoes to fill

STURGIS, S.D. – Sturgis will open up the girls basketball season on Friday night at home against the Douglas Patriots.

The Scoopers finished 13-8 last year.

But they lost five seniors to graduation including Loralee Stock and Olivia Jolley.

However, the cupboard is far from bare. As a matter of fact, the Scoopers have a solid foundation to work around.

Sturgis has seven seniors on this year squad. They include Kylie Shaw, Sydney Shaw, Sarah Janz, Kennedy Bush, Norma Probst, Ainsley Sabers and Emily Gray-Smith.

“It’s kind of a special group,” Sturgis girls basketball coach Jordan Proefrock said. “They’ve been with us since eighth grade. We moved them up to our lower level. And the cool thing about them is they’ve kind of just stuck together the entire time and progressively improved every year. Now they’re seniors and they’re just really a tight knit group, selfish. They have really good team chemistry and really good camaraderie as well.

“But we’re all pretty small,” Sturgis senior forward Sarah Janz said. “So we’re going to be a quicker team this year I think. We’re going to have to work more as a team this year since we did lose those two obviously. I think we can accomplish that. We work very well together and we’re good at passing the ball around all the time.”
