Sturgis annexes the Jackpine Gypsies Race Track

STURGIS, S.D. — The Sturgis City Council has voted to annex the Jackpine Gypsies Race Track, placing it within city limits.

City Manager Dan Ainslie says the annexation is a fair trade, the track receives city services while paying property taxes, just like other private properties in the city.

“The goal is just to have them continue doing what they are doing and hopefully become even more successful and have them actually become a part of the city.” said Ainslie.

Track Chairman Brett Winsell says the groups’ main concerns with the annexation is losing control of the property and losing money.

Ainslie says the city does not wish to control the track operations or events.
