Structure fire at the Black Hills Furniture Shoppe

Rapid City, S.D. — The Rapid City Fire Department responded to a fire at the Black Hills Furniture Shoppe at 209 East Main on August 13th. A fire erupted in the garage attached to a furniture store in rapid city.

The fire began a little before 10:00 a.m. and erupted in the garage attached to the back side of the store. There were reports of heavy smoke in the area, but the fire was put out quickly. Station 3 was also called to assist after the fire was extinguished, to ensure there was no possibility of another fire, as the store had highly flammable materials such as wood, lacquer, and varnishes.

“We got the fire knocked down very quickly,” said Lt. Jim Bussell, the RCFD Public Information Officer. “Right now we’re just in the process of doing a good overhaul, making sure we that have all areas of heat identified, and that everything is cold. And so, that process, that will take a little bit. We’re gonna be pretty meticulous about how we do that.”

Ensuring the area was completely safe took a bit longer than usual, as firefighters needed breaks due to the high temperature, but there were other surprises. Two hives were broken, freeing a swarm of angry bees. One person was evaluated for smoke inhalation, but refused treatment. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
