“Street Cloud” formation appears over the Black Hills
RAPID CITY, S.D. — An orderly formation of “street clouds” appeared over the Black Hills Thursday afternoon under northwest winds.
These are formed much like waves in the ocean, except only the wave is visible to us. Rising warm air cools and condenses, then sinks, forming the nice individual puffy clouds.
Street clouds from space! Here is that same formation over the Black Hills but from the GOES-16 Satellite. Notice the street clouds are only over the Black Hills? Like a rock in a river, the hills cause turbulence in the atmosphere – leading to our unusual weather patterns. #sdwx pic.twitter.com/dar34LVGRv
