Coffee first.....then cleanup. And thank God for generators that supplied light in the darkness, freezers and refrigerators that kept food from spoiling, rural electric crews who worked day and night to restore power to the prairie and towns. Okaton area.

I was only a half mile from my folks’ place in Belle when I got caught in the storm. Here is a photo of my windshield and the size of hail.

PHILIP, S.D. – Severe weather crossed sections of the Black Hills Region late Saturday afternoon and evening, leaving a trail of damage starting from Butte County and the Black Hills stretching through the central portions of South Dakota.
Damage reports ranged from hail reports up to 4″ in diameter near Philip, SD to wind reports exceeding 90 MPH near Castle Rock in Butte County.

Straight line winds and large hail are thought to be responsible for the damage in places like Philip, which was hit particularly hard. The combination of high winds and large hail led to a destructive combination, punching holes in buildings, roofs and vehicles.
Some buildings were torn apart altogether.
The National Weather Service and Haakon Emergency Management is expected to investigate the reports to determine the extent of the damage and the exact cause.
