Stolen military hat returned after 50 years
RAPID CITY, S.D. — Half a century is a long time for a prank to come full circle. But last week in rapid city, it finally did after a piece of local military history was returned.
The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology received an old military hat with an apology note from an anonymous person.
The note reads, “I took it many years ago as a simple prank and have deeply regretted it ever since”.
The hat was taken from colonel Donald D. Gabe over 50 years ago.
Colonel Gabe was the ROTC Professor of Military Science at the school.
He also served in the Korean War and Vietnam, he died in 2013 and the School of Mines is sending the hat to his family.
