Stocks make gains, oil prices rise as OPEC raises production

NEW YORK (AP) — Stocks rose in afternoon trading on Wall Street Thursday, but remained choppy amid wariness about economic growth and rising interest rates.

The S&P 500 rose 1.1%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.5% and the Nasdaq rose 1.9%.

Technology stocks shook off an early stumble and rose.

Companies that rely on direct consumer spending and industrial firms also gained ground. Small company stocks made solid gains.

Crude oil prices were slightly higher as the OPEC oil cartel and allied countries including Russia agreed to raise production levels as gas prices hit another record high in the U.S.
