Stevens Raiders poised to make run at State AA Volleyball Tournament

Stevens will play Brookings on Thursday at 11 a.m.

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Rapid City Stevens has qualified for the State ‘AA’ Volleyball Tournament every year since 2000.

During that time, the Raiders captured one state title and finished runner-up twice.

This year, Stevens hopes to bring home another state championship.

Stevens enters the state tournament as the No. 1 seed with a 31-1 record. The Raiders only loss came against Sioux Falls Washington back on Sept. 15.

Phebie Rossi leads the team with 222 kills and 68 blocks, followed by Elizabeth Schaefer with 209 kills.

The Raiders will play Brookings in the opening round on Thursday at 11 a.m., a team they beat just three weeks ago.

The Raiders feel like they have some unfinished business this season after losing to Harrisburg in the state finals last year.

“I want them to go in feeling calm and to take one game at a time,” Stevens volleyball coach Kylie Voorhees said. “That’s what I’ve been really emphasizing with the girls. Just because we’re ranked number one, its the state tournament. It’s honestly anybody’s game. But if we play our game, I think we’ll finish where we want to finish.”

“I think it really shakes the nerves out,” Stevens outside hitter Elizabeth Schaefer said. “It helps with the nerves that we’ve been there before and we’ve done it. We’ve had the opportunity to play in a state championship before too. So if we do get that opportunity to do it again, I feel like that’s definitely a benefit to having done that before.”

“I definitely feel like we have some unfinished business and we want to prove ourselves,” Stevens middle hitter Carly Buehner said. “So it’s a good opportunity for us.”
