Stevens boys and girls basketball teams prepare for the state tournaments

Class AA Basketball Tournaments tip off Thursday at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center

RAPID CITY, S.D. –  The end of the boys high school basketball season is in sight.

In fact, eight teams are ready to battle for a state championship as the State ‘AA’ Boys Basketball Tournament tips off on Thursday at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.

Rapid City Ctevens is the only team from West River this year.

The Raiders enter the tournament with a 15-6 record and will play No. 4 Brandon Valley in the opening round on Thursday at 7 p.m.

Dylan Pourier leads the Raiders with 16.5 points per game followed by Daniel Vigoren with 8.7 points per contest.

Meanwhile, the 16-5 Brandon Valley Lynx are led by Evan Talcott who averages 16 points per game.

Stevens head coach Chris Stoebner says a lot has changed since the Raiders defeated the Lynx during the first game of season back on December 7.

“It was the first game of the year and both teams have changed,” Stevens boys basketball coach Chris Stoebner said. “Us in particular with having Dawson Paulsen go down and having to kind of have other guys step up and change our game a little bit. We’ll look at the first game a little bit. Obviously it helps us a little bit with personnel. But like I said, they’re a different team playing different individuals. But they do have three players in particular that we really got to get under control.”

“Coach usually tells us every single game that we’ve been playing now that we need everyone’s best,” Stevens guard Tyson Elliott said. “Of course, it happens on the defensive end for us. Just boxing out and holding teams to one shot is going to be a very big thing for us.”

State AA Girls Basketball Tournament

The State ‘AA’ Girls Basketball Tournament also kicks off on Thursday at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.

The Rapid City Stevens Raiders have a tough first round opponent. The Raiders will take on No. 2 Harrisburg at 1 p.m. on Thursday afternoon.

Stevens enters the tournament with a 15-6 record, while the Tigers are 17-4.

Kyah Watson has been the offensive catalyst for the Raiders all season. She leads the team with 13 points per game followed by Grace Martin and Bailee Sobczak who each average 7 points per contest.

Although, Stevens didn’t play Harrisburg during the regular season, the two teams met last year in the opening round of the state tournament.

“They’ve got a great post in Jeniah Ugofsky and then a plethora of players that learned to play with her,” Stevens girls basketball coach Michael Brooks said. “She’s a great passer. She can bring the ball up as a 6’1″ post and kind of is like a point forward and allows a lot of things to happen for that team. We know they’re physical. We know what we’re going to see defensively is going to be a lot of man. Luckily for us, we’ve gone against man the last two games.”

“We watched some film on them and I guess our plan is to just play the way we play and just be aggressive,” Stevens junior Kyah Watson said.
