State Volleyball Preview: Hill City set to open play on Thursday against Wagner

RAPID CITY, S.D. – High school volleyball teams from across South Dakota will be traveling to Rapid City this week for the state volleyball tournaments.

All three classes will compete in the Summit Arena at the Monument.

Two defending state champions from last year are back at the state tournament, Sioux Falls O’Gorman in Class ‘AA’ and Sioux Falls Christian in Class ‘A’.

Meanwhile, there’s only two teams from western South Dakota competing in the upcoming volleyball tournaments, the Burke Lady Cougars and the Hill City Rangers.

Hill City qualified for its first ever state tournament last season and finished in eighth place.

This year, the Rangers are the fifth seed with a record of 26-7 and will face Wagner in the opening round.

The Red Raiders enter the tournament with a record of 27-6.

The Rangers are led by seniors Marie Peckosh and Cassidy Moody, along with sophomore Maggie Taylor.

Peckosh leads the team in kills with 7.2 per match, while Moody and Taylor are both averaging around 3.5 kills and two blocks per match.

Hill City and Wagner will square off on Thursday, Nov. 18 at 1:45 p.m. in the Summit Arena.
