State prison inmate serving 175 years for sexually abusing minor in Rapid City passes away

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — The Department of Corrections announced this afternoon that a state prison inmate has passed away following an illness.

The DOC says that Ralph Buchhold, 63, died on Friday, April 12 at the South Dakota State Penitentiary.

Buchhold was serving multiple sentences for second-degree and third-degree rape, and sexual contact with a child under the age of 16.

Buchhold lived in Rapid City and sexually abused an 11-year-old girl from 1999 to 2003 until she turned 15 and chose to report the abuse.

In September of 2005, Buchhold was given the maximum sentence for his charges, 175 years in prison.
