RAPID CITY, S.D.- Minimum-security inmate Scott Reiners is back in custody and is currently in the Pennington County Jail.

Reiners was placed on escape status earlier this week for violating rules of the work release program. He failed to return to the Rapid City Community Work Center at the appointed time July 3 following his work release shift.

Scott Reiners was the third inmate in less than 48 hours to fail to return from his work release job.

He is currently serving sentences from both Minnehaha and Brookings counties for possession of a controlled substance.

Failure to return following an assignment constitutes second-degree escape, a Class 5 felony punishable by up to 5 years in prison. Work release programs are typically implemented for inmates nearing the end of their sentences as a way of rehabilitating them to reenter society after prison. Often, they are within months of being released.
