State Boys Basketball Roundup: St. Thomas More falls to Sioux Valley in the semifinals

RAPID CITY, S.D. – After defeating Lakota Tech in the opening round of the State ‘A’ boys basketball tournament, the St. Thomas More Cavaliers moved one step closer to winning a state title.

St. Thomas More squared off against Sioux Valley on Friday in the semifinals at the Summit Arena in Rapid City.

Despite a great effort by both teams, the Cossacks upset the Cavaliers, 54-46.

Sioux Valley led by as many as 17 points in the third quarter.

But STM battled back and pulled to within three points with 1:07 remaining in the game.

However, the Cossacks hit some key free throws down the stretch to secure the win.

The Cossacks were led by Hayden Ruesink with 19 points.

Meanwhile, Caleb Hollenbeck was the leading scorer for St. Thomas More with 19 points followed by Cade Kandolin with 13 points.

Sioux Valley will play top-seed Dakota Valley in the championship game on Saturday at 7:45 p.m.

St. Thomas More will take on Flandreau in the third place game at 6 p.m.
