State basketball tournaments to run as scheduled despite storm warnings

RAPID CITY, S.D. — The South Dakota High School Activities Association (SDHSAA) has announced that the state high school basketball tournaments and visual arts events scheduled to begin this Thursday in Aberdeen, Rapid City and Sioux Falls will run as scheduled.

State boys Class B, A and AA basketball tournaments, and girls Class A and AA will be happening Thursday through Saturday, March 14-16.

Additionally, the 5th Annual State Visual Arts Competition and Gallery will be taking place at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center on Friday and Saturday, March 15-16.

According to Gary Ellenbolt, who covers the state tournaments for South Dakota Public Broadcasting, “There’s a tradition of state tournament blizzards … they tend to not cancel the games because the teams usually get in there by late Tuesday or Wednesday. The High School Activities Association figures — and rightly — that the players are here, it would be worse to have them scattered about and on the roads, so I have never seen a cancellation.”

In a press release, the SDHSAA advised family and other visitors to the events to use caution if they plan on traveling, “We encourage all spectators to use judgment in regards to travel to the tournaments, particularly on Wednesday and Thursday.”

The SDHSAA says its staff will be monitoring the weather and stay in contact with the National Weather Service and the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.
