Start off 2019 by donating blood to save lives

RAPID CITY S.D. – Many businesses and organizations were closed on New Year’s Day, but one organization which saves lives in the community stayed open.

Vitalant, formerly United Blood Services, is in need for donations in the new year. Local hospitals are open every day, and blood donation centers are vital in supporting them.

January is also National Blood Donor month. Staff at Vitalant says 2019 is a great time to make a habit of donating blood.

“With the new year people are looking at making resolutions, making changes, doing something great with their life, making a change,” said Vitalent Donor Recruitment Manager Brittany Segel. “We’re asking people to make the change to come in and be a blood donor. Donate at least three times a year. Come in, make that commitment to saving lives and helping people in the community.”

Every pint of blood donated has the potential to save three lives. Platlets however, only have a shelf life of five days, so they’re always in need of donations.

“If you come in, we take a look at your blood type and find out how your blood type can best be used, whether that’s for platelets, plasma, or red blood cells.”

If you want to donate, you can visit Vitalant’s center on West Omaha Street or by clicking here.
