Star-Spangled Independence Holiday Celebration offers activities for everyone to enjoy

HILL CITY, S.D. — Hill City held a day filled with activities that everyone could enjoy with the Star-Spangled Independence Holiday Celebration, Saturday, July 2.

With it being its second year of the event, the plan is for it to continue each year — growing with more activities in the future.

9girlwaving“It’s all about community. It’s all about our love for our community, the beautiful Black Hills, our great state of South Dakota and our nation,” Executive Director of Hill City Area Chamber of Commerce Janet Wetovick-Bily said. “So, that’s what brings us here to celebrate. It’s a little hometown pride that we share with everyone, and we’re so grateful that everyone is here.”

This event brings the community together to enjoy, but visitors traveling for the holiday also enjoy it.21momanddaughter

“We swell our little town population by several thousand. So, we think maybe around 3,000 typically come or more,” Wetovick-Bily said.

The day came to a start with a pancake feed, followed by the parade on Main Street where candy was thrown and one float handed out hot dogs.

Craft vendors had items that people could look through and buy through out the day, with food trucks close by for anyone that had a craving.

There were events like the vintage auto “Shine ‘N Show” while kids were able to participate in some activities like tile painting and slime making.

“We are a family focused community and I’d say that by far, one of the most patriotic. And so this is a really fun way to kind of showcase that for our own community as well as for all the visitors that come and visit us,” Kids’ Activities Supervisor Roxann Dubois said.

Activities went well into the evening to finish out the day with the showing of “National Treasure II” and live music.

If you weren’t able to make it out this year, Hill City hopes you’ll come visit next year to celebrate.
