Spearfish Veterans Monument Committee hosts fundraiser

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The Spearfish Veterans Monument Organization hosted a pancake feed on Sunday to raise money for a monument that is just under halfway complete.

Five granite structures will make up the piece, bearing the names of veterans who served in battle as far back as the Spanish-American War.

Residents interested in having their name or a family member’s name inscribed must qualify by meeting certain criteria — such as having been a Spearfish resident for at least one year.

“Most all of us that are on the committee are from around here originally. So it is part of our heritage, and Spearfish is a great community to grow up in,” Committee Treasurer Doug Henwood said. “It is a great community to have family in and we just wanted to show appreciation to the veterans that have all served here.”

Other fundraisers for the monument include events such as chili feeds and raffles.
