Spearfish moving forward with medical cannabis dispensary license approval

SPEARFISH, S.D. – With the November 12 deadline passed, Spearfish is moving ahead to bring a medical marijuana dispensary to the city.

Pennco Cannabis 2Six applications came in ahead of the deadline and are being reviewed to make sure they meet the proper guidelines.

Spearfish has only one of these licenses to give, but there are plans for a lottery system if more than one application is approved.

“The ones who meet all the criteria will all go to a lottery,” City Planner Jayna Watson explained. “We’ll do a lottery drawing locally here in early December and then the one selected for the dispensary license that is successful will go on to apply with the state of South Dakota’s registration process.”

The city also has licenses to give out for other cannabis-related activities such as growing and testing if applicants are approved, similar to the dispensary license process.

“We have two licenses available for growing, manufacturing, and testing,” Watson said. “The successful dispensary applicant could, in theory, come back and get one additional license for each of those.”

The drawing is scheduled for Monday, December 6 and will take place during the city council meeting.
