Spearfish gymnast qualifies for the USA Gymnastics National Championships

SPEARFISH, S.D. – The best gymnasts in the country will gather in Daytona Beach, Florida this week to compete in the 2021 USA Gymnastics Development Program National Championships.

Among those competing will be Ruthie Wehrung from Spearfish.

Wehrung was an alternate at the national championships two years ago.

But this year, the 11-year old qualified for the national meet after a stellar performance at the Jr. ‘A’ Region 4 Championships in Iowa.

The Level 10 gymnast won region titles in the floor exercise and balance beam and finished second in the all-around.

Although, she will be going up against 14-year old gymnasts, Wehrung is excited and focused on competing for a national title.

“We’ve been practicing making sure every routine is how I just practice it,” said Ruthie Wehrung. “You just keep on doing it the same no matter where you are and who’s watching and stuff.”

“She does know that she’s probably one of the younger members in the Jr. A age group,” said Spearfish Gymnastics Academy coach Chris Summers. “So it is a little bit more difficult knowing that you’re competing against kids that have two more years of experience than you do. But Ruthie is a tough competitor. I’ve seen her warm up terrible and go out and slam a routine that goes 9.85. So she’s tough mentally when it comes to actually competing.”

Wehrung, who trains at the Spearfish Gymnastics Academy, will practice on Friday, May 14 and then compete on Saturday.
