Spearfish City Parks will be introducing a memorial tree program for the community

SPEARFISH, S.D. — A new program in Spearfish will give residents an opportunity to honor a friend or loved by planting a memorial tree in one of the city’s parks.

The city’s Parks-and-Rec Department originally offered memorial benches, but due to a lack of space, that program was discontinued.

The city was getting frequent requests for a program to honor those who have passed away, and came up with an idea that would also help improve the parks themselves.

Rex McDonald, Spearfish Parks and Recreation, said, “One of the things the Parks Department is focused on is the urban canopy here in Spearfish. So we’re working on creating a diversity in our urban canopy right now. So there’s a lot of neat initiatives we got going on within our Urban Forestry Program and this is one of the things that’s really going to help us get where we want to be.”

If you would like to have a memorial tree planted, you can choose to do so in either the spring or fall, and also help with the planting if you’d like.
