Spearfish Chamber releases first leaf color report of the season

SPEARFISH, S.D. — With fall officially starting in four days, the Spearfish Chamber has released its first Leaf Report of the season. The report tracks the leaves changing color and the pace at which they [the leaves] are falling.

It details that birch and aspen trees have reached almost 100% color change for the season. If you’re in the canyon, you can identify these trees by the bright yellow leaves. Sumac and woodbine trees are shedding their leaves, leaving an array of colors on the canyon floor.

“We know that not only are our residents and community interested in the leaves changing but also visitors to the area who are wondering when is the best time to see the beauty of the change of the seasons,” says Kimberly Talcott, the report writer.

The chamber says the leaf drop rate is very low at this time and due to the dry summer the fall colors may not be as vibrant this year.
