South Dakota National Guard training exercise scaled back

RAPID CITY, S.D. — The South Dakota National Guard’s annual summer exercise is going to look very different this year.

While it usually goes for two weeks in mid-June, Operation Golden Coyote is now scheduled for July 11 through the 25.

The number of soldiers, both US and international, who participate will also be scaled back.

With travel and training restrictions from the pentagon in place, 290 soldiers from two South Dakota National Guard units will be participating.

Training locations for Golden Coyote will also be limited this year to guard armories and training areas.

And several engineering projects and humanitarian missions that usually coincide with the training have been canceled.
