South Dakota man pleads not guilty to 22 counts of wire fraud

RAPID CITY, S.D. — A South Dakota man has been indicted by a federal grand jury for 22 counts of wire fraud. Former Rosebud Tribal Police captain-Calvin Waln Jr. appeared in federal court and pleaded not guilty to the indictment. 

The maximum penalty upon conviction is 30 years in federal prison and/or a $1,000,000 fine, as well as 5 years of supervised release. The charges relate to Waln knowingly writing insufficient funds checks from two financial accounts which he knew had been either depleted of funds or closed.

He was released on bond and a trial date is set for May 28, 2019.
