Former S. D. Highway Patrol officer announces run for PennCo Sheriff

RAPID CITY, S.D. – Ryan Mechaley, a former South Dakota Highway Patrol officer, has announced his candidacy for Pennington County Sheriff.

A spokesperson for Mechaley says the decision to run stems from “a skyrocketing crime wave, growing societal disdain for law enforcement and media-political poisoning of the basic premise of law and order.”

“In the insanity of the present moment of defund the police, and constant allegations of racism and political bickering, America is losing sight of the basic function of law enforcement. If you break law, you go to jail,” Mechaley said.

Pennington County Sheriff Kevin Thom announced Monday morning his plans to retire once his current term ends. The election to succeed him will take place June 7.
