South Dakota firefighters gather in Rapid City during Bike Week

Pactola LakeRAPID CITY, S.D. — The Black Hills will be even more busy during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally as firefighters from around South Dakota assemble in Rapid City to brush up on their skills.

The South Dakota Task Force 1 (SDTF-1) — which is made up from the Rapid City Fire Department, Sioux Falls Fire Rescue, Aberdeen Fire Rescue, and Watertown Fire Rescue — will be performing assigned operations at the Pactola Reservoir from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Aug. 12. There will be both land and water operations.

The land operations team will inspect the land of the dam in a simulated inspection using ropes.

The water operations team will be assessing the water by boat to deploy the Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) team, who will have a simulated search of the water side of the dam.

Several other trainings will take place earlier in the week in Rapid City.

SDTF-1 purposely gets together in Rapid City to train during Rally Week in case their assistance is needed. Because the emergency call volume goes up as the tourist population increases, it’s important to have extra people on hand in case of an emergency.

The training is in cooperation with the Bureau of Reclamation, United States Forest Service, Black Hills National Forest, Mystic Ranger District, South Dakota Game Fish and Parks, Pennington County Sheriff’s Office, Pennington County Emergency Operation Center, Department of Homeland Security, Rapid City Water Treatment and the City of Rapid City.

The team is trained to respond to chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, and explosive threats, as well as specialized rescue techniques including land-based search, structural collapse, swift water, confined space, high-angle, and rope rescue.
