South Dakota DCI, State’s Attorney charge two suspects in pursuit, officer involved shooting

Police LightsPIERRE, S.D. — Two suspects in connection with a high-speed pursuit and officer involved shooting have been indicted on four different counts, including two counts each of attempted first-degree murder. South Dakota Attorney General Mark Vargo and Lake County State’s Attorney Wendy Kloeppner made the announcement on Monday.

The two suspects include 40-year-old James Joseph Lanpher Jr. from Sioux Falls, and 45-year-old Bonner Raymond Juel from Harrisburg.

Both Lanpher and Juel face the following charges:

  • Alternate counts of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer for each attempted murder count
  • Two counts of commission of a felony while armed with a firearm
  • Habitual offender charges

The incident, which took place on July 14, spanned across three different counties including Lake County, Minnehaha County and Moody County, ending in Madison County. The state Division of Criminal Investigation is leading the review of the incident.

Bond for each suspect has also been raised to $100,000 each.
