Soldier Creek man sentenced for involuntary manslaughter

TODD COUNTY, S.D. — A Soldier Creek man has been sentenced for involuntary manslaughter following a 2018 incident in which he struck two children with his vehicle.

Robert Staples, Jr., 35, was sentenced to 37 months in prison followed by two years of supervised release. Prosecutors say on September 14 of 2018, Staples was backing a vehicle out of his driveway in the Soldier Creek community in an area where children frequently play in the street.

He struck two children, one of them fatally. According to court documents, Staples had THC, a compound in marijuana, in his bloodstream at the time of the wreck.

Staples pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in May of 2019.
