Snow and cold expected, preparations begin
RAPID CITY, S.D.- Cold temperatures and snow are anticipated to move in Sunday afternoon, lasting through Monday. However, a warm Saturday provides the perfect opportunity to prepare for the upcoming system.
One way to help others in the elements is by placing winter gear on the statues downtown. “With a small investment, a little bit of effort, they can place these items on the downtown statues and it’s helping people in need,” says Rapid City’s Communications Coordinator Darrell Shoemaker. “They’ll grab those items especially when it’s cold, they’ll put those gloves on, they’ll put the stocking cap on, they’ll go on their way, and we know that it’s keeping them warm during some very cold conditions.”
Officials also advise checking on your neighbors and lending a helping hand by doing things like helping shovel when weather conditions are dangerous.
The city has started the preparation process already in efforts to get ahead of the incoming system. “Crews will be ready, generally speaking, we’ll go out and look at those bridge decks, those hill areas that can get hit first, maybe doing some pretreatment of areas, but how we go about it, what our game plan is, will be dictated by other nature,” Shoemaker adds.
NewsCenter1’s weather team will provide updates before and during the event, with delays and closings also being updated on air and online.
