Small Business Saturday brings in big bucks for Rapid City

RAPID CITY S.D. – Black Friday has become a staple holiday for consumers in recent years, but there is a push for people to shop locally as well.

Small Business Saturday, a movement to encourage shopping at local stores has grown in popularity. Locally-owned businesses across the Black Hills are participating in Small Business Saturday as well.

The holiday was started by American Express in 2010.

“I think we should be doing more to support small businesses,” said Jennifer Culhane, a visitor from Chicago, Ill. “The big box stores always get all of the business on Black Friday and throughout the rest of the year, so I think it’s important that we help out small businesses.”

Some also say local businesses help grow the character of Main Street USA.

“It kind of brings more culture to your own town, from a small town aspect, you need to have an area to shop,” said Robbie Schroeder from Minot, N.D.

While the businesses celebrated by the holiday are small, their contributions to the economy are anything but. The US Small Business Administration says locally-owned shops employ around 210,000 people in South Dakota. That’s nearly 60 percent of the state’s workforce.

“I like to support local business because I think Main Street is more important than Wall Street,” said James Hearn, a visitor from Cheyenne, Wyo.
