Skincare Essentials: The Dreaded Pimple
This week’s Skincare Essentials focuses on pesky pimples. Local dermatologist, Dr. Linda Fromm explains what causes blemishes and what to do if you have them.
Fromm says that overproduction of oil and a buildup of bacteria contribute to pimples. Areas of the skin that have the largest number of functional oil glands, such as the face, neck, chest, back, and shoulders, are often affected. Symptoms include small, tender bumps on the skin, often filled with pus.
Pimple popping, or zit popping, is the act of bursting or popping pimples with one’s finger. It’s a common practice, but not one that’s recommended.
Popping can lead to the introduction of bacteria into the pimple, infection, the creation of more pimples, and permanent scarring. Fromm says to let the pimples run through their life span. But if you must pop a pimple, make sure your utensil is sanitary and you are gentle when extracting.
Treatment can include topical creams or oral medications, but Fromm encourages more preventative measures, like keeping the skin clean and using moisturized.
