Sept. 1 – 7 declared as “National Blood Donation Week”

RAPID CITY, S.D. – To encourage more people to become blood donors, this week (Sept. 1 – 7) has been declared as National Blood Donation Week.

New blood donors are needed every day to replace those who can no longer donate. September is also National Preparedness Month, which highlights the importance of always having enough blood readily available when and where patients need it.

It’s the blood already on hospital shelves that saves lives when disasters hit, like the recent wildfires in the west and hurricanes along the Gulf Coast. “Giving blood is one of the easiest ways to give back to your community,” said Anne Burtchaell, Mountain Division Vice President at Vitalant. “We rely on 3,500 donations each week to help these patients heal and recover.”

Blood donation takes about an hour from check-in to refreshments.

Visit vitalant.org or call 877-25-VITAL (877-258-4825) to schedule an appointment.
