Senator Thune’s SD Mines visit highlights research & technology need
At a tour of South Dakota Mines Ascent Innovation Center, Senator Thune spoke with SD Mines officials about the need for a renovation in the building.
RAPID CITY, S.D. — Senator Thune paying a visit to South Dakota Mines Friday to hear the campus’ plans for the renovation of the Ascent Innovation Center.
While South Dakota Mines is currently asking the state legislature for over $5 million for the renovation, they also discussed what that could look like in getting federal funds.
Senator Thune acknowledged the importance of research and technology schools like SD Mines and says that the support will help keep the U.S. the leader in the field.
“It’s the cutting edge research and technology that is going to lead the way for the United States and keep us competitive in the global marketplace and hopefully more importantly than that, the leader in the world when it comes to investing in research and in the applications, real-world applications that come with it,” Senator Thune said.
Senate Bill 97 passed the state Senate in Pierre on Wednesday and now heads to the House Committee on appropriations.
