Semi trailer goes off-road on I-90 near Piedmont

UPDATE: The driver of a tractor-trailer has been cited for careless driving after allegedly falling asleep and losing control.

The accident happened shortly after 7 a.m. Friday at Exit 46 on the eastbound side of Interstate 90.

According to the South Dakota Highway Patrol, the semi drifted and struck a barrier on the exit ramp, went through a guard rail, and struck a minivan that was westbound on Sturgis Road.

Two of the three people in the van — a 9-year-old female and a 14-year-old male — were treated for minor injuries.

It took crews three hours to get the trailer cleared from the road.

PIEDMONT, SD — According to the Piedmont Fire and Ambulance Service, a semi trailer is off the road near mile marker 46 on Interstate 90.

No injuries are reported, however, traffic will be impacted near Elk Creek Road and Sturgis Road.

Authorities advise drivers to avoid the area if possible.
