SDHSAA designates softball as a spring sport

PIERRE, S.D. – South Dakota will hold its first-ever sanctioned high school softball season in 2023.

The board of directors for the South Dakota High School Activities Association voted Wednesday to make softball a spring sport.

Softball was sanctioned in South Dakota as an official varsity sport during a vote back on November 3.

But at the time, the board couldn’t decide if softball should be played in the fall, spring or summer.

There are currently six girls’ sports in the fall, while only three in the spring.

State officials expect 35 to 40 teams will participate next season and will more than likely be split into two classes.

The tentative start date for the first practice is March 20, 2023 with a state champion being crowned in early June.
