PIERRE, S.D. — The South Dakota Senate is wasting no time in scheduling Attorney General Jason Ravnsborg’s impeachment trial.

One day after the state House issued two articles of impeachment, Senate president pro tem Lee Schoenbeck announced the trial is tentatively scheduled for June 21 and 22.

Senators are scheduled to meet later this month to confirm those dates.

According to Schoenbeck, Pennington County State’s Attorney Mark Vargo will act as chief prosecutor.

Vargo was part of the original team of state’s attorneys that reviewed the evidence to determine what charges Ravnsborg should face. Vargo left that team before any charges were filed.

In accordance with the South Dakota Constitution, Ravnsborg is suspended from office and would only return if the Senate does not vote to remove him.
