SD Mines football team ready to tackle the new season

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The South Dakota Mines football team is looking to put the 2020 season behind them, and for good reason.

COVID-19 and a shortened season led to a tough first year for head coach Charlie Flohr.

The Hardrockers finished 2-2 last year with both losses coming to Chadron State.

South Dakota Mines has 10 seniors on this year’s team and returns several key starters.

Ahmad Lewis will lead the running attack again this season.

He’s been the team’s leading rusher in each of the last two years.

In the last full season in 2019, Lewis rushed for over 1,385 yards and nine touchdowns.

Plus, the Rockers have a number of receivers eager to hit the field including Collin Zur, Ira Murphy and Joe Luebbers.

Meanwhile, South Dakota Mines has five quarterbacks on the roster vying for the starting job.

Jayden Johannsen and Spencer Zur are the front runners after taking all the snaps last season.

“Right now, we’ve really got three kids competing for our starting quarterback job,” said SD Mines head football coach Charlie Flohr. “Jayden Johannsen started two games for us last year and then Spencer Zur also started two games for us last year. Then in the 2019 season, Toby Smith, who is still a member of our football team, he started two or three games in 19. So I’m very happy with that spot. We’ve got three kids that have starter experience here in the RMAC. So I’m just excited to see how those guys have really accepted their role and challenged one another.”

Overall, coach Flohr recruited 39 players in the off-season.

Flohr feels like he addressed the team’s biggest need which was on the defensive side of the ball.

“For us, it was probably more on the defensive backfield at the DB spot,” said Flohr. “We needed to create a little bit more depth there. So we really went out and recruited a lot of DBs within our freshmen class. Knowing they’re probably going to be a little raw coming into this season. But they’re very athletic. They run really well. We’re excited to see those guys compete and push our older kids.”
