SD House committee defeats bill requiring birth certificates to reflect biological sex

PIERRE, S.D. — HB 1076, a bill to require birth certificates to list the biological sex of newborns, was defeated in committee Tuesday morning.

The House Health and Human Service Committee voted 7-6 to send the bill to the 41st legislative day, effectively ending the bill.

HB1076 requires “birth certificates reflect biological sex.”, but members of the South Dakota LBGTQ community say the bill discriminates against transgender people living in the state.

Roughly a dozen protestors assembled peacefully outside the State Capitol Tuesday morning as the vote took place.

Florence Republican Representative Fred Deutsch had introduced the bill.
