SD House approves tax-assessment bill on classification of land
PIERRE, S.D. — A bill that aims to correct tax-assessment issues for West River farmers and ranchers was approved by the South Dakota House in a 38 to 30 vote on Monday.
The bill was introduced by Rep. Trish Ladner of Hot Springs and Rapid City Senator Jessica Castleberry and focuses on the classification between crop and non-cropland.
The lawmakers say land, that’s always been grassland, was reclassified as cropland after a satellite-based survey with the reclassification coming with substantially higher tax rates.
Ladner and Castleberry say the bill will give those affected an opportunity to have their land reclassified. The bill now heads to the Senate.
