SD Democratic Governor Candidate Jamie Smith visits Rapid City

At the open house, the District 15 Representative and Minority Leader of the House talked about how he would improve issues in the state as governor.

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Democratic Governor Candidate and South Dakota House Representative Jamie Smith was in Rapid City Saturday for an open house.

At the open house, the District 15 Representative and Minority Leader of the House talked about how he would improve issues in the state as governor.

Representative Smith talked about issues facing the state, like teacher salaries and the difficulties of public education.

He also talked about the state’s work force development and the issue of mental health in the state, specially how that affects the incarceration rate.

“Addiction is an illness and we need to treat that people make bad choices when they are addicted to drugs and alcohol and oftentimes ends up causing them to be incarcerated,” Rep. Smith said. “But if we can stop the pattern by treating the illness, I believe as a society we can get ahead.”

According to BallotPedia, Representative Smith will run against Barry Hulse for the Democratic Primary.
