School of Mines holds annual Veterans Day Salute

RAPID CITY, S.D. — On November 10, the School of Mines is recognizing students and faculty who have served or are still serving in the military.

The school hosted its annual Veterans Day Salute.

Ceremonies started in front of Surbeck Center, with members of the school’s ROTC program raising a banner, which was donated by a former student.

The director of the school’s Veteran’s Resource Center hopes that when students see the banner, they think about the others serving their country.

“Just maybe take a moment and think about the sacrifices that service members and their families have made protecting this country,” said School of Mines Veteran’s Resource Center Director Derek Flom.

Following the raising of the banner, events moved indoors with guest speaker Brigadier General Mike Oster, with the state’s National Guard.

Mines currently ranks seventh in the nation for military friendly schools.
