School of Mines holds annual Parade of Trees event
RAPID CITY, S.D. — Students at the School of Mines are getting into the holiday spirit by helping non-profits.
Last year’s event was downscaled to a parade of wreaths, but this year the trees are back in all their glory.
19 trees in all fill the ballroom, each uniquely decorated to match this year’s theme, “The Giving Tree.”
Student organizations got pretty creative with their designs from a tree made from stacks of ramen to others decorated with donated items.
The community’s invited to vote for their favorite tree while donating to the charity each one represents.
“The campus picked this theme, we usually have them voted on,” said Sam Harkin with the SDSM&T Office of Student Engagement. “And so, when this was picked we thought what a better way to kind of bring the holiday spirit with the community especially with the challenging times that a lot of them are going through right now.”
The trees will be on display in Surbeck Center’s ballroom through Friday.
The public vote will help determine which team will win the People’s Choice Award with winners in each category announced after the voting ends on Friday.
