Schaefer, Jungclaus named High School Athletes of the Year

RAPID CITY, S.D. – The 47th Annual Rapid City Sports Hall of Fame and Sports Recognition Banquet was held on Monday night at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.

The event honors both current and former athletes, as well as, coaches and contributors.

For the second year in a row, the Female High School Athlete of the Year was Elizabeth Schaefer from Rapid City Stevens.

Schaefer was a member of the 2018 Class AA state championship volleyball team and was a two-time state champion at the 2018 state track meet.

Meanwhile, the Male High School Athlete of the Year was Wyatt Jungclaus from Rapid City Central.

The senior earned eight letters during his high school career and was the 170 pound champion at the 2019 State A Wrestling Tournament.

“It means everything to me,” Elizabeth Schaefer said. “I’m so honored to be up for this award. Even up for it. The other athletes that were nominees were such amazing athletes. So to win, it means a lot.”

“I know all the people up there are really respected in their sport,” Wyatt Jungclaus said. “They’re top in the state at all the things they do. Just all the accolades everybody else has gotten. It was really cool to be up there with everybody.”
