Salvation Army of the Black Hills preparing for annual winter clothes distribution
RAPID CITY, S.D.– The Salvation Army is preparing to roll out their annual Coats For Kids drive, set for the beginning of October.
What is the Coats For Kids Drive for?
Every year, Salvation Army officials prepare hundreds of coats for school-aged children in the Rapid City area from kindergarten all the way through grade 12. And as the fall weather sets in and temperatures continue their downward trends through the remainder of the year, the coats will help keep children warm.
“This is a great opportunity to make sure that our school age kids are prepped and ready for the winter months that are coming soon,” Black Hills Area Coordinator for the Salvation Army Major Jerry O’Neil said. “And it is a great way to keep them safe and warm. So we are very excited about the opportunity to make that happen.”
How can I pick up a coat?
Pick up will be located at the Salvation Army of the Black Hills, 405 N Cherry Avenue, Rapid City. Please bring your photo ID and some way to prove the child’s age, such as a school document or a Medicaid card.
How many coats will be available to the public?
Major O’Neil estimates between 400 to 500 coats will be available, and is confident more people will be signing up for the program than last year due to rising costs of food and other essential products due to inflation.
When will distribution occur?
9 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 3.30 p.m. October 6 – 7.
Families can register children Thursday and Friday of this week during scheduled hours with pick-up happening right after. “Anything folks can do that will be a benefit to them and save them a little bit of money, I think they are going to take advantage of it,” Major O’Neil explained.
“We we anticipate a much larger crowd this year because of the economy and the way things are going. They can just come anywhere from 9:00 a.m to 12:00 p.m, and 1:00 p.m. to 3:30 p.m on Thursday and Friday. And they can do the registration and the pick up right there at the same time.”
What sizes will be available?
Families will be able to pick out coats from a variety of different sizes to ensure they have the right ones for their children, with child and adult options available
