Rushmore Plaza Civic Center is getting an all new arena, groundbreaking scheduled for Nov. 16th
RAPID CITY, SD — During a Wednesday ‘Coffee with Planners’ event, Executive Director Craig Baltzer, of Rushmore Plaza Civic Center shared design plans and more details about the up-and-coming arena that will be breaking ground Nov. 16th.
“Instead of doing a presentation [for ‘Coffee with Planners’] I just took our little pictures and our boards and I put them all over the table and got the crowd started and let them ask questions,” said Baltzer. “I don’t know if they’ve seen it before, or they have more questions or they are brand new to it. It was just kind of getting familiar with what we’re building.”
The building itself will contain over 11,000 seats depending on the event and configuration.
Civic Center staff are hoping that in the future the building will play host to a variety of events, particularly NCAA Division 2 games.
“We are building the building, and design-wise, with expectations that one day, five years down the road or something, we will get a team. But we are certainly going to go after sports tournaments. High school, college, I mean we sent some staff to the NCAA bid process this past year…the building is being built with all that in mind.” Baltzer said.
The project designs have been in the works for nearly a year. The groundbreaking ceremony will be at the Civic Center at 3 p.m. Nov 16th with a special presentation by the CEO of the soon-to-be named Civic Center naming rights partner.
