Rushmore Mall sold, to be repurposed and renamed

RAPID CITY, S.D. — Rushmore Mall has been sold, it will be repurposed and it’s getting a new name.

Rushmore MallThe buyer is RockStep Capital, which is based in Texas, and it is an investment firm specializing in shopping centers in secondary markets and smaller communities.

It owns properties in 10 states including the former Aberdeen Mall, which is now called Uptown Aberdeen.

Rushmore Mall will be renamed Uptown Rapid in the first part of 2022.

After the sale was announced, former mall General Manager Sandy Brockhouse announced she will return in the same capacity.

As the mall industry transitions into something different, RockStep’s goal is to turn Uptown Rapid into more of a community centerpiece that is still with retail, but with other features to be announced.
